The Rebuilding of Ground Zero, Part 156

Posted on 10:05 by Unknown
1 WTC (the Freedom Tower) is poised to be the tallest building in New York City within the next two weeks. It's just a matter of time before the steel perimeter reaches its apex and work can proceed on the roof and antenna levels. "The World Trade Center perimeter steel is up the 100th floor," said Foye, at a press conference following the authority's monthly board meeting today. "I think if not

It's Time For Florida Move To Amend The Stand Your Ground Statute

Posted on 08:05 by Unknown
Are Florida legislators taking the hint about the mess with Stand Your Ground that were exposed by the Tayvon Martin death at the hands of George Zimmerman and moving to act to modify/amend/repeal it?

Thus far, the Senate has not considered any changes - the 2005 items were the enacting/amending legislation imposing SYG.

No action in the House either.

The Florida Statute that needs to be

Who Wants To Be a Multi-Millionaire?

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown
That's the big question of the day since today's Mega Millions jackpot is likely to exceed $540 million ($389 cash option). Even after federal and state taxes, you're talking about serious coin. You'd still be looking at around $230 million or so.

So, what would you do with it?

I know what I'd do.

I'd first make sure that Mrs. Lawhawk retires from work. That's a no brainer. I'd retire soon

Israel in Review

Posted on 10:00 by Unknown
Some of you may have noticed a significant absence over the past two weeks. I spent most of that time in Israel with Mrs. Lawhawk, touring the northern part of the country. It was part of our 10th anniversary gift to each other, and it was awesome to spend it with the love of my life.

It's a tour that I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to see some of the most interesting and

NJ Transit Commuters Continue Railing About Delays

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
NJ Transit wants people to think that they're doing a great job. They tout the fact that according to their metrics, NJ Transit on-time performance is as good as it has ever been. Yet, the problems with delays keeps getting worse. It had its best December ever, with 96.6 percent of trains arriving on time ("on time" is within 5 minutes, 59 seconds after the scheduled arrival) and second-best

Scientists Discover New Species of Frog In.... New York City

Posted on 09:30 by Unknown
Scientists have been able to conclusively determine that a new species of frog inhabits the New York City metro area (a region spanning from Trenton, New Jersey up into the Hudson River Valley and Southern Connecticut. The species of leopard frog has been overlooked because its physical appearance isn't all that different than other species. However, it has a distinctive call and has a distinct

The Rebuilding of Ground Zero, Part 155

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown
The Freedom Tower (1WTC) is approaching its topping out. The tower is probably a week or two away from completing the bulk of construction. While the tower's antenna would remain to be built, the rest of the tower would be in the process of being fitted out for occupation.

Meanwhile, the NYPD has come up with a new security plan that makes little sense and would do more to disrupt traffic in

UN Envoy Visits Syria as Bloodshed Continues Unabated

Posted on 06:40 by Unknown
The United Nations sent former Secretary General Kofi Annan to Syria to meet with Bashar al-Assad's regime to get them to stop the brutalization of Syrians who seek political and social reforms (and Assad's overthrow). Assad may have given a diplomatic response to Annan, but the real response could be seen by yet another intensification of the crackdown and military assaults against rebel

Assad's Assaults Upon Syrian Opposition Continues

Posted on 10:10 by Unknown
Bashar al Assad's forces continue their brutalization of the Syrian people and are now focusing their efforts on the area around Idlib in Northern Syria. That comes on the heels of multiple reports that Assad's forces have mined the border with Turkey to thwart refugees from crossing into Turkey to escape the violence. The UN has updated its tally of those who have been killed or displaced by the

Delegate Math

The GOP seems to still have issues with Mitt Romney and conservatives continue splitting votes between Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, but despite the lackluster performance by Romney, the math remains in his favor for an uncontested convention. He's going to be the nominee despite the protestations by Santorum and others.

Once Again, Media Focuses On Israel's Response To Palestinian Terror Attacks - Not The Terror Attacks Themselves

Posted on 09:05 by Unknown
Over the past several days, Israel has endured more than 100 mortar and kassams fired at it. They've been fired by Palestinian terrorists from inside Gaza at civilians in Ashdod and elsewhere within range of the mortars and rockets.

It was only Israel's response - a series of airstrikes and counter battery fire, which killed and injured Palestinians that the international media caught wind of

Now Is Time For New Jersey To Purchase Properties Along Route 17 Corridor

Route 17 through Bergen County is one of the busiest corridors in the state, and traffic congestion is a constant companion to drivers on the stretch between Route 4 in Paramus at the Garden State Plaza and Essex Street in Hackensack. LED Bulb That Won Government Contest To Go On Sale

"LED Bulb That Won Government Contest To Go On Sale" is how headlines should read, but the Washington Post and right wingers are instead claiming that this is a government subsidy - emphasis on the subsidy - and that the LED bulbs are more expensive than those that are currently on the market.

GM Throws $400 Million At Peugeot With No End-Game

Posted on 08:25 by Unknown
This story should get wider coverage. General Motors, which is still trying to shed its legacy costs and has shown some strength in the current fiscal year, made the decision to invest in flagging French automaker Peugeot to the tune of $400 million.

There's absolutely no reason that GM should have made the move. It doesn't help GM in the slightest and adversely affects GM's bottom line.

Super Tuesday Scorecard

I see that the media outlets are busy saying that Mitt Romney didn't score the knockout blow yesterday - even though he won 5 races and was the leader in two others. New Jersey Should Finally Pass Fluoride Bill

New Jersey has long lagged the rest of the region in municipalities that fluoridate the water supplies. Misinformation is one of the reasons - the fact that junk science is driving the opposition is costing New Jersey residents' public health.

The costs for fluoridation are a fraction of the dental health costs. It's far cheaper to fluoridate the water than to deal with the costs of cavities and
