September 11, 2013 -- I Remember Lt. Col. Jerry Don Dickerson Jr.

Posted on 07:22 by Unknown
Since its inception, I have participated in Project 2,996, a tribute to the 2,996 innocent victims of 9/11, where bloggers eulogize each victim. Previously, I have remembered Mary Lenz Wieman, Mark Francis Broderick, Capt. Patrick J, Brown, Hagay Shefi, Alison Marie Wildman, Daniel Thomas Afflitto, and Donna Bernaerts-Kearns. Please check out these tributes as well today, as they deserve

12 Years Later: Remembering 9/11

Posted on 15:45 by Unknown
September 11, 2001. New Yorkers were heading to the polls to vote on the next mayor of the city. It was a morning full of promise and baseball fans were excited about the Yankees' chances of making the playoffs, the Mets thinking about the future, and the start of the new football season. In other words, it was a day not much different than those September days we've been experiencing in the New

Crumbling Infrastructure Watch

Posted on 06:30 by Unknown
This morning, New Jersey commuters trying to get to the Holland Tunnel found themselves navigating a maze of detours and major delays as a key route was shuttered.

The emergency closure was the result of concrete falling from the covered roadway on Route 139 which is one of two major highways leading to the tunnel. Emergency repairs are underway, but the fact is that the roadway needs

Drumbeat For Action Against Syria's Assad Grows Louder

Posted on 07:45 by Unknown
The ongoing civil war in Syria has led to more than 100,000 dead, more than 2 million refugees situated in grim camps in Syria, Turkey, Jordan, and the entire region is in turmoil, especially after the latest reports indicating that chemical weapons of some kind were used against civilian populations in a Damascus suburb.

It's the latest in a string of scattered incidents involving chemical

Yosemite Besieged By Massive Wildfires

Posted on 06:00 by Unknown
At more than 120,000 acres, the Rim Fire continues burning all through the Central Sierra Nevada range, and has burned areas within one of the nation's crown jewel national parks - Yosemite.

While Yosemite Valley is safe for now, the same can't be said of the Hetch Hetchy area.

Gov. Christie Must Fire NJ Transit Officials For Failing To Follow Rail Plan Before Sandy

Governor Chris Christie has given his blessing and backing to NJ Transit officials in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, which devastated NJ Transit's rail fleet. 343 railcars and locomotives were flooded and damaged. A portion of the fleet remains out of service due to flood damage.

The costs are in the hundreds of millions, and yet NJ Transit officials have skated by despite incontrovertible

Egypt’s Descent in to the Heart of Darkness

Madness, power, and no good outcome on immediate horizon.

The military’s removal of President Mohammad Morsi opened up a can of worms from which the Egyptian polity is not likely to recover from anytime soon.

Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood had been busy attempting to impose its socio-political will on a nation that was largely unwilling to go along with their agenda. The military was even more

Yet Another NJ Transit Trespasser Fatality

Posted on 07:00 by Unknown
Well, it's been a crappy morning all the way around. NJ Transit had yet another trespasser incident with a pedestrian killed by an oncoming train just outside the Radburn Train Station. That left the morning commute for folks on my usual train line screwed. Today's incident was about a 1/4 mile from the nearest proper crossing.

This one appears to have been a suicide.

That's after another such

2013 Festival of Ballooning

These were shot earlier today at the 31st Annual Festival of Ballooning, at Solberg Airport in Readington, New Jersey where more than 100 balloonists participated.

A Bad 24 Hours For NJ Transit

Posted on 11:50 by Unknown
Overnight, NJ Transit had a service disruption on the Main/Bergen line when a pedestrian committed suicide by standing in front of an oncoming train in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. The Infrastructure Mess

Infrastructure and public safety once again come to the forefront with the collapse of the I5 Bridge in WA. It's looking like investigators are focusing on a truck that passed through the area shortly before the accident and whether it struck the overhead supports, knocking the span out of alignment. That would take quite a bit of force, unless other issues were at play (including corrosion and a

And This Is Why I Can't Wait To Get Back To Yosemite

Posted on 15:55 by Unknown

There were a couple of nights where the skies were so clear that we could see the Milky Way and the billions and billions of stars and galaxies that populate the universe. As we were driving back from the Valley to where we were staying in Wawona, Mrs. Lawhawk pointed out that the moon painted the valley and she could see Bridal Veil falls even though it was "dark". She was absolutely right.

Gov. Christie Must Fire NJ Transit Officials Over Gross Incompetence Before Hurricane Sandy

The Rational Irrationalism of North Korea

Posted on 06:15 by Unknown
North Korea keeps ratcheting up the threat index with pronouncements that they're going to unleash nuclear annihilation against the US and South Korea. The threats are definitely crazy, but I think they've been acting as rational irrationalists. What do I mean by this? It means that they're crazy like a fox and have a definite strategy here. They know from past history that crazy gets the goods.

On Yesterday's Historic Israeli Elections

Posted on 08:30 by Unknown
Yesterday, Israelis went to the polls to determine the new makeup of the 19th Israeli Knesset. All 120 seats were up for grabs, and while Israeli pollsters largely predicted that current Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu's Likud bloc would retain its plurality in the Knesset, that margin would shrink and his current coalition government would see a shakeup. Currently, Netenyahu's coalition is
